Showstoppers: Spring 2016-DCS Art Talent

Showstoppers: Spring 2016-DCS Art Talent
Untitled overlapping silkscreen:  Maricarmen Garcia uses a unique registration and marbling technique to create a beautiful arrangement of Greek characters.  She was even surprised to see the new colors that emerged as she hand printed and flash dried each layer.

Madeline Secules illustration of canals in Venice:  Madeline drew this in her illustration class and submitted it online.  Her advanced sense of perspective and stylish hatch marks make this a real showstopper.
Flying Along by Tembie Sexton is really cool digital illustration she created in Sketchbook pro on her ipad.  Tembie has a real fascination with fantasy art and has been learning techniques related to animation and gesture drawing.

Eye Illustration:  Another digital milestone from Tembie

Victoria Stewart created this amazing likeness of a pair of converse all stars in her illustration class.  Clearly she she is a master catching the details and reframing the composition.

Tembie Sexton Wizard-wow-surely everyone can see these illustrations on TV some day.  We are a hard working crew in our illustration class.  Notice the details in the magical light that is coming from the hand.

Denver drew this in his illustration class and I can't help but admire the rustic feel of the paper and smudge marks.  Well crafted and fun this image is one of my favorites!

Elijah Preston created this with the 3d tool in Photoshop and blew me away as a 7th grader.  Elijah seems to have a real interest in Photoshop and enjoys digital illustration as well.

Now Tembie has started using flash and other GIF animation platforms to make her drawings come alive.

Feature Artist: Maricarmen Garcia

Maricarmen is  a senior at Dehesa Charter School and has been a passionate visual artist for years.  I have had the pleasure of teaching MC ,as she likes to be called, for the last 7 years while working at Dehesa.  Like her contemporaries, she draws inspiration from street artists like Banksey, Shepherd Fairey, and the late Keith Haring to name a few.

Most of her work is whimsical and illustrative but her sculptural pieces have grown increasingly striking over the last couple of years.  From Photography to watercolor to illustration and shoe design, she has tested her mediums to see what she likes. As a result, she has become jack of all trades who enjoys screenprinting and planning community installations for art functions and fundraisers like the WOW festival at the La Jolla Playhouse and the annual student talent show at the Queen Bee in North Park.

Mc is a talented musician and works hard to dedicate time for weekly vocal and instrumental practice.  Like her artwork she is humble and sincere with her approach to each new task.  I hope you enjoy viewing the works I have selected for her online exhibit.

Screen-printing with the middle school 2013

Carter Tarkany and Nick Salisbury work as a team to make silkscreen prints.

Silkscreen printmaking was introduced on a secondary level last year and the kids loved it.  This year Dehesa will be teaching print registration and color separation.
